In our western society, most people would not believe anyone here worships idols. That is probably true if you see an idol as something made of stone or wood. However, in its most elemental definition, an idol is something that takes the place of the Lord Most High. Using this meaning of the word, you can easily see that there are many idols that have been set up. Some people worship their careers, spending all of their time trying to get ahead. Some put their families or friends in God's place. Even the pursuit of happiness can become an idol, since leisure time is a premium commodity in our society.
If you have set up any of these idols or something similar in your life, Adonai the Lord says that you are following after strange gods. Even though it may appear that you are succeeding in your endeavors, you are really being hindered. The flow of your life will eventually lead to an increase in sorrow and pain. You may begin to have multiplied worries which will bring grief, hurt, and anger, not only to yourself, but also to others. It will begin "to rain on your parade", so to speak.
When this begins to happen, you may be astonished and dumb-founded, for you thought your plans were working. You offered yourself almost to the point of shedding blood, in order to succeed. However, now you are facing melt down, for you had set yourself up as 'god' and your 'god' cannot keep you from failing. You will be consumed, wear out, and decay. Your name will no longer be on anyone's lips. Instead of esteem, you will have dishonor.
Therefore, you should regularly examine your life to make sure that you have put no other gods before the Almighty. As you do this and walk in repentance, the Lord Jehovah will extend forgiveness and mercy to you. When you submit your plans to God's will, you will find peace and joy, instead of sorrow and pain. Instead of shame and disgrace, respect and honor will be multiplied to you.
