Match Day--Oct 24th--International Forgiveness Day!
Once again it seems that the designations for the day do not seem to go together. It is "Match Day" and "International Forgiveness Day".
When you think of "Matches", the first picture that comes into your mind is a small piece of wood with a treated top. When you strike that treated top against a rough surface, a fire is ignited. A match could also refer to two things that go together, such as co-ordinating pieces of clothing. You have heard the term "A match made in Heaven", which occurs when two people come together who seem perfect for each other.
As I was thinking about how to co-ordinate these two designations, it occurred to me that many times we use our tongues like matches. We are having a dicussion with someone, when suddenly a spark occurs, which quickly ignites a fire. Many times, instead of putting that small fire out when it first starts, we fan the flame. Soon we are in a full blown arguement, burning the other person with our words and looks.
After the damage is done, even when the feelings are still bruised, it is time to extend forgiveness, which is like dousing a fire with water. Forgiveness can stop the burning and quickly bring healing. The quicker forgiveness is given and received, the quicker you can get back to enjoying your loved ones, friends, and neighbors.
Therefore, use your matches to start a camp fire or light a candle. And use your words to speak kind and loving things.
